The Chinese government said on Wednesday that China has vowed to increase the recovery rate of plastic films used in agriculture because as unrecovered films are left behind, there is growing concern about soil pollution and leaving traces on crops
Plastic coverings, essentially thin films placed on a single crop, are used in the dry and dusty north of China to improve growth conditions and increase yield by keeping crop moisture and suppressing weeds.
About 200,000 square kilometres have been deployed in the country (

A notice issued by several ministries on Wednesday said that China will try to increase the recovery rate of plastic covers to 80% next year and ensure that the use of plastic covers is \"zero growth \".
It aims to achieve a recovery rate of 100% and to begin reducing total land coverage by 2025.
China will also work to improve its monitoring capacity and include coverage of pollution in performance indicators of local government officials, the notice said.
Manufacturers will also face pressure to improve product standards.
China uses about 2 million to 3 million tons of plastic covering a year, but Yan Changrong, a researcher at the China Rural Science Institute, said the waste disposal capacity is only 180,000 tons, said in a recent forum.
Although the use of plastic films can significantly increase production in the short term, unrecovered residues will eventually degrade the soil and pollute the crops, said Xu Jing, a representative of the Shandong provincial parliament, as exports of spinach and ginger from China were found to contain traces of plastic, in a proposal submitted to the National People\'s Congress
Dealing with large amounts of plastic waste has become one of the pressing challenges facing China.
According to the Beijing University of Chemistry, China\'s recycling capacity is about 23 million to 25 million tons, accounting for only half of the total amount of plastic waste in the year.
