how \'greener\' plastic packaging became a problem — and how to fix it
We are exploring why our community is at a turning point and how we can better recycle it.
By joining our Facebook group, you can be part of the conversation.
Not long ago, almost all of the baby food was packed in cans, pet food was packed in cans and boxes, frozen vegetables and trail mix were packed in bags --
You can recycle the package.
Now, these products are usually sold in convenient, re-sealable plastic packages that often do not enter the cycle bin.
The story, called Stand-Up Pouch, shows that innovations in packaging can sometimes pose some significant environmental challenges.
But with the development of this industry
The global single pocket market is worth $22.
At $74 billion in 2016, it is expected to nearly double to $40.
According to atis statistics, 65 billion in 2022
Someone is working on a solution.
BC recently launched a pilot program to collect stand-up bags and other flexible plastic packages such as chip bags at grocery stores and elsewhere so they can figure out how best to recycle them.
Some manufacturers, including a Canadian company, have recently launched biodegradable and recyclable products.
In theory, this recyclable pochcan can be sold in supermarkets across the country.
But these efforts themselves also show that finding ways to recycle new packaging is more difficult than it seems.
Layered flattlayfield flexible packaging is a Canadian company that produces vertical plastic bags at a factory located in B RichmondC.
, Mainly selling blood bags and other medical products, as well as food and consumer packaging.
According to mark Rose, president of the company, there is a good reason
Including environmental protection
Why did the pouch replace so many aluminum cans, glass cans and hard plastic containers.
On the one hand, they are lighter and use less materials, saving energy and costs in manufacturing and transportation.
Other benefits come from layering different types of plastic, each with a unique advantage.
\"You get these super
When you combine the plastic together, you will find its features . \"
AtLayfield\'s factory, a huge polyester fiber passes through a printer and covers them with bright and clear images
Eye Dog and text with Brand, ingredients and nutrition information.
Polyester can keep the ink well and prevent oxygen from entering so that dog food is fresher.
Next, these plates prevent moisture by laminating them into machine reels of polyethylene. A third,metal-
The coated plastic layer will let the light go out, thus accelerating corruption.
Ross said that the result of this is a convenient, reusable package that can keep food fresh and reduce food waste, which in itself leads to greenhouse gas emissions.
The package is attractive and hard enough to fit on the shelf
Help the marketing of products. The downside?
Since it is made of different materials, it is not recyclable.
\"You won\'t take apart the glue at any recycling facility,\" Ross said . \".
Because different plastics have completely different melting temperatures, melting will not help either.
Some specific upright pouches are currently being recycled: they are collected through the manufacturer
Funded projects and converted into plastic wood through a company called terracycle.
But, given the popularity of the pouch, what remains to be done is a growing challenge.
While Rose is convinced that plastic bags are still greener than others, it took him several years to try to develop more eco-friendly packaging
Part should be requested by the customer.
\"Although plastic bags are our most sustainable option at the moment, people still seem to want more,\" he said . \".
This spring, his company introduced two recyclable bags: one plastic for each
Polyethylene or polypropylene.
Other companies have previously introduced similar recyclable bags, including Dow chemistry, Accredo packaging and Amcor Flexibles, which are using their seventh generation of packaging and method dishwasher detergents.
There is a recyclable bag that is not widely used, that is, it is difficult to make them stiff and puncture-resistant with a clear window in front
Many brands want quality, says Rose.
He said he thought he had found a way to address these challenges, but the resulting bags did not stop oxygen from entering as effectively as bags made of multiple plastics. (
Recycled bags produced by other manufacturers are mostly used for things that do not deteriorate. )
Still, Rosesaid is excited about her company\'s new recyclable pouch.
Another challenge is that recyclables do not mean that they will be recycled because the blue box program will not normally be set up to handle the pouch.
Roadside recycling is usually sent to a sorting facility where flat objects, such as empty stand bags, end up entering the flow of paper
According to the PAC Packaging Association, it is then sent to the \"pollution\" of the landfill \". When B. C.
The company\'s pilot plans to begin accepting stand-up bags and other \"flexible plastic packages\" in June, requiring consumers to send them to the warehouse.
The project is trying to find ways to recycle plastics, including researching and developing an enzyme or catalyst that will help to find plastics, said Alan Landen, who recently was the general manager of recycled BC, prior to EncorpPacific\'s new position, he was interviewed by the CBC.
Things that cannot be recovered will be converted into energy particles and burned in industrial sites in the province, such as cement kilns, as a substitute for coal or diesel.

In Canada, there are many sites including Whole Foods, Safeway, Metro and Loblaws.
But when CBC News contacted six such places, most said they did not accept the pouch. The drop-

Project assistant Jessica Edington says stand-up bags based on bags, packaging and movies, including recyclable.
They\'re all actually the same material.
Therefore, a company dealing with this material should be able to handle different forms of material.
But Edington said that how2 recycling does not work directly with the store to set up the location, so consumers do need to check with the local store, to make sure they \"don\'t put in things that might pollute that particular program \". \"The solution?
All these factors make consumers feel very complicated and confused.
This shouldn\'t be the case, says Jamie Rhodes, head of upstream projects in the US. S. non-
A profitable company in Rhode Island launched a campaign against standing pouches in 2014.
He believes that it is the responsibility of the manufacturer selling the packaging to ensure that the packaging is actually recyclable.
\"If they claim it\'s a recyclable bag, but they\'re not willing to invest in the system to actually collect and recycle it, then their claim is just environmental protection, he said.
Rose of Layfield flexible packaging acknowledged that given the light weight of a single bag and the fact that recyclable items are sold in tons, it is difficult to collect single bags effectively.
\"Recycling can be detrimental to the environment,\" he said . \".
\"I still think that at some point that separate bag will end up in landfill.
\"He thinks the better solution is a special kind of plastic he developed, called Bioflex.
Bags made of Bioflex are designed to break down in a landfill within 10 years to produce gas that can be collected and burned as fuel.
But he admits that customers are not as enthusiastic about this as they are about recyclable pouches.
Ultimately, the waste system needs to be changed so that manufacturers can be fully responsible for managing the packaging they produce at the end of their lives, Rhodes said --
Whether recycling is involved.
But Rhodes believes that this is only part of the solution, and he believes that people must also rely less on singles --
Use plastic, especially when there is a replacement.
\"I don\'t think we can recycle our approach from this issue.
